Problem of the Week

Updated at Dec 10, 2018 5:38 PM

This week we have another equation problem:

How would you solve \(4{x}^{2}+4(x+2)=16\)?

Let's start!

\[4{x}^{2}+4(x+2)=16\]

1
Expand.
\[4{x}^{2}+4x+8=16\]

2
Move all terms to one side.
\[4{x}^{2}+4x+8-16=0\]

3
Simplify  \(4{x}^{2}+4x+8-16\)  to  \(4{x}^{2}+4x-8\).
\[4{x}^{2}+4x-8=0\]

4
Factor out the common term \(4\).
\[4({x}^{2}+x-2)=0\]

5
Factor \({x}^{2}+x-2\).
\[4(x-1)(x+2)=0\]

6
Solve for \(x\).
\[x=1,-2\]
