Problem of the Week

Updated at Jun 19, 2023 11:18 AM

This week we have another algebra problem:

How can we factor \(4{v}^{2}-21v-49\)?

Let's start!

\[4{v}^{2}-21v-49\]

1
Split the second term in \(4{v}^{2}-21v-49\) into two terms.
\[4{v}^{2}+7v-28v-49\]

2
Factor out common terms in the first two terms, then in the last two terms.
\[v(4v+7)-7(4v+7)\]

3
Factor out the common term \(4v+7\).
\[(4v+7)(v-7)\]
