Problem of the Week

Updated at Jan 16, 2023 3:56 PM

For this week we've brought you this algebra problem.

How can we compute the factors of \(42{w}^{2}-5w-2\)?

Here are the steps:

\[42{w}^{2}-5w-2\]

1
Split the second term in \(42{w}^{2}-5w-2\) into two terms.
\[42{w}^{2}+7w-12w-2\]

2
Factor out common terms in the first two terms, then in the last two terms.
\[7w(6w+1)-2(6w+1)\]

3
Factor out the common term \(6w+1\).
\[(6w+1)(7w-2)\]
